The Rising
Movie Details
Synopsis | The Rising is a cinematic, dark film that perfectly balances traditional cinematography with new-style flare. The vibe is original, organic, gothic--but the surfing is lightning quick. The most refreshing aspect of the film is that it doesn't stick to the screen--meaning there's no bubble gum here. The Rising skillfully depicts the industries most talented surfers in everything from California beach break to triple overhead Tahiti. The Hawaii sequence is chalk full of surfers who were so-called "underground" in 2001, but became staples in magazines and videos. The song pumping in the background is "Dark Percussion" and sums up the feel entirely. Jamie O'Brien, Bruce Irons, Koby Abberton, Danny Fuller, and Manoa Drollet rush headfirst into Pipe and smack Rocky Point around in a flurry of airs and deep gouges. Bobby Martinez, Jun Jo and Dan Malloy charge Indo with Malloy's elevator wipe out setting the stage for some fast-paced ripping that rolls along to a cool, jungle rhythm. Mr. Martinez continues his onslaught at the film's conclusion and ultimately stands out as the film's hero. His nonchalance is frightening considering the speed he generates. It seems he's right on top of his board at all times; whether he's four feet above the lip or smacking one of his infamous backhand snaps. The film encapsulates the entire surfing experience and triumphs because the ripper and the novice can both relate. |
